Sunday, October 18, 2015, 2-4 p.m.
Kentler International Drawing Space
353 Van Brunt Street, Red Hook, Brooklyn
April Vollmer, a wonderful artist who specializes in Japanese mokuhanga woodblock prints and whose beautiful book, Japanese Woodbloc k Print Workshop, has just been published by Random House, will give us an in-depth introduction to this technique.
She will talk about the history of the art as it evolved in Japan during the Edo period and will describe the process of making the prints. The presentation will include samples of washi, Japanese handmade paper, and a set-up of blocks and materials that will be used to demonstrate the actual printing process. Just back from an invited talk and exhibit in Tokyo, April is giving us a special opportunity to discover the beauty of mokuhanga.
Florence Neal, Executive Director and Co-Founder of the Kentler, will also be on hand to tell us about the gallery and the current exhibit.
At 4 p.m. there will be a public reception and book-signing for April’s book. Members are welcome to stay for this event and, if they wish, purchase a signed copy of what Roberta Waddell has called a “remarkable” and “indispensable” book.
